Hanks' Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) (1X) liquid

Balanced salt solutions are based on the physiological saline first developed by Ringer. They are composed of inorganic salts and may be supplemented with glucose. Balanced salt solutions have been designed to maintain cells in a viable state for short periods of time rather than to promote growth. Balanced salt solutions are used for washing tissues and cells and as diluents for treating cells and tissues with various agents, while maintaining a physiological pH and osmotic pressure.

Hank's Balanced Salt Solution is buffered with phosphate. Therefore the solution will maintain its physiological pH at atomospheric conditions. For this reason it is the primary solution used in enzymatic treatments of cells and tissue and the final rinse of cells prior to the suspension of the cells in a complete growth medium.
All GIBCO HBSS contain potassium chloride, monobasic potassium phosphate, sodium chloride, dibasic sodium phosphate, and D-glucose. Contains no calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, magnesium sulfate, or phenol red.
